How to Store Physical Gold

NGB Hong Kong Desk·Published ·Updated

Once you own physical gold, storage becomes a practical question of security, access and cost. Each option involves a trade-off.

Home storage

Storing at home gives immediate access and no ongoing fee, but places security and insurance entirely on you. A quality safe, discretion, and confirming that your household insurance covers bullion are the minimum requirements.

Bank safe deposit boxes

Safe deposit boxes are widely used in Hong Kong and offer strong physical security at a predictable annual cost. Access is limited to banking hours, and contents are generally not insured by the bank by default.

Private vaults

Specialist vault operators offer segregated or allocated storage with insurance and longer access hours. Costs are usually charged as a percentage of value or a flat annual fee.

Records and packaging

Whichever option you choose, keep invoices, serial numbers and assay packaging together and stored securely. Complete documentation speeds up any future sale.
