How Gold Bar Prices Work
NGB Hong Kong Desk·Published ·Updated
A gold bar price looks like a single number, but it is built from a few clear components. Understanding them makes it easy to compare products.
Spot price
Spot is the international benchmark price for one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of gold, quoted in US dollars and moving throughout the trading week. Every physical product price starts here.
Weight and purity
The metal value of a bar is spot multiplied by its weight in troy ounces and by its fineness. A 100 g bar at .9999 fine contains almost exactly 100 g of pure gold; older or jewellery-grade items may contain less.
Premium
The premium covers refining, minting, packaging, shipping, insurance and the dealer's margin. It varies by product and by market conditions, and is generally lower per gram on larger bars.
Currency and volume
NGB displays prices in HKD or USD at the prevailing rate, and publishes volume tiers where they apply, so larger quantities show their own unit price.
